At Franziskus Gymnasium Wels innovation in learning is taking an exciting new step forward. Starting next school year the case methodology will be introduced in the Oberstufe encouraging students to work across subjects, think independently and develop creative solutions to real-world topics.
This year all Year 6 classes had the opportunity to test this new approach through a five-week case on the topic of addiction. The project brought together the subjects of Art, Biology, and English with English serving as the working language throughout the entire process.
Students explored the scientific background of addiction in Biology while in English they read and analysed a novel dealing with addiction and its consequences. In Art lessons they expressed their ideas and emotions creatively by designing impressive pieces in the style of psychedelic art for an art exhibition. The project concluded with a role play that combined the knowledge and perspectives from all three subjects.
The case methodology encouraged students to work independently, think critically and cooperate closely with their classmates. Guided by their teachers they approached the topic with great enthusiasm and dedication. The final presentations and artworks did not only demonstrate excellent academic results but also remarkable creativity and teamwork.
The pilot project showed how motivating and enriching interdisciplinary learning can be. Both students and teachers gained valuable experiences making the introduction of the case methodology next year a promising development for the school community.
